Blogging Dictionary (A partial list of useful terms to help you navigate our blog.)
Blog: A personal online journal –a collection of posts (see below)– that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. In this blog our readers, also called “bloggers” are also the writers.
Commenter: One who leaves a comment on a blog. Our blog has been set up as a conversation. So when people post an article, there is room for you to respond by leaving a comment. You can agree, disagree, add some thoughts of your own, give it kudos or the raspberry. –Remember, it’s a conversation.
Link: To get from one place to another when you’re on the Internet, you can’t flip pages. Instead, you “click on links”. Links are words that are often underlined or in a different color. When you pass your mouse over the word, it sort of lights up. When you click on it, it will take you to a different place on the blog. Here’s an example:
- If you want to see an article that was written in April, go to “Archives” and click on the link April and it will take you to the articles that were posted in April
Post: A post is an article that you write. It can be an anecdote, a memory, a poem, some random thoughts, –whatever moves you– with a title and your name. A blog is made up of a collection of posts.
RSS: Really Simple Syndication. A method of describing news or other Web content that is available for “feeding” (distribution or syndication) from an online publisher to Web users.
Sidebar: No drinks at this bar! Sidebars are columns generally found on the side of most blogs, which have information not contained in the articles. The information is often in the form of links to other parts of the blog or even other places on the Internet.
Tabs: These are the titles at the top of every page on a blog or web site (Home, Tell Us, ElderChicks’ Picks, Etc.). Clicking on any one will take you to another place on the blog.
